Old timer at the shop in Akron told me he used to hammer out fenders with a body spoon and torch, made me feel like I cheat with my stud welder
Was helping a guy named Ray clean out his garage in Akron a couple weeks back and he pulled out this old spoon and a torch setup he used on cars back in the 70s. He told me they would heat the metal, work the dents by hand, then file it smooth, and there was no filler involved on most jobs. I have been pulling dents with my stud welder and a slide hammer for 6 years now and never once touched a torch to a panel. Part of me thinks we lost something, but the other part knows I can finish a quarter panel in an hour instead of a day. Any of you guys still work metal the old way or is that skill pretty much gone from the shops now?
