The $40 gallon of clear coat that turned my spray gun into a glue stick
Got a deal on some no-name clear coat from a guy at the swap meet in Phoenix. Figured it was worth a shot for a bumper job, what could go wrong right? Mixed it up, shot the panel, and it came out looking like snot on a doorknob. Within 20 minutes the whole thing went sticky and peeled off in sheets like old sunburn. Had to strip the bumper down twice and re-clear with my usual stuff. Ended up burning 3 hours of a Friday afternoon and the customer saw it on the lift and just laughed. That bargain clear coat cost me more in labor than the $40 I saved on the can. Anyone else ever gamble on mystery paint supplies and get burned? What did you find in the bottom of that bucket?
Learned that lesson the hard way with some cheap primer from a flea market. Took me a whole afternoon to sand it all off and start over. Now I just stick with the brand I know, even if it costs more upfront.
