Turns out my messy shelf of old sandpaper grades came in clutch for a custom finish

I always thought it was just clutter, but having all those grits on hand let me nail the prep work without a trip to the store.

My grandfather kept coffee cans full of sandpaper scraps in his garage. He taught me that having a range of grits on hand isn't clutter, it's being ready for the job. I've saved more projects by digging through my own cans than by having brand new sheets. That random 220 grit piece is often the exact thing you need for a final touch. It's not about the stuff being old, it's about having the right tool without delay. A planned trip to the store often breaks your focus more than using an older piece of paper.

What were you working on that needed that specific of a finish? That's the best feeling, when a bit of old junk saves the whole project. Having the right grit ready to go makes the sanding steps so much smoother.

Calling it the best feeling is naive; old junk often messes up projects.
