Old timer's torque wrench comment made me rethink my whole routine

Tbh, I used to just snug up oil drain plugs by feel until a retired diesel guy watched me do one and said 'you're gonna strip that pan by next spring.' He told me to grab a torque wrench and look up the spec, so now I do it every time, even on quick lube jobs. Anyone else here trust the click over their instinct on fasteners?

The 30 ft-lbs on my Ford's oil pan is the one number I actually remember, and it surprised me how much lighter that feels than a good yank by hand. Once I used a torque wrench on my lug nuts too, I realized I'd been over-tightening those for years, probably warped a rotor or two without knowing it. The click is just a sound, but it takes the guesswork out of the whole job, especially when you're in a weird position under the car. I mean, instinct has its place for things like body clips or plastic trim, but anything metal on metal, I'm looking up the spec now. It's annoying to dig out the wrench for a little plug, but it beats drilling out a broken bolt or buying a new pan. Once you start doing it every time, it becomes as natural as grabbing a socket.
