Changed my mind about using the manual for every single step

My lead at the hangar in Tulsa kept saying, 'The book is a guide, not a bible, use your head too.' I mean, I always followed the wiring diagram exactly, even for simple stuff. Last week I was stuck on a comms box fault for like two hours because the manual's test point voltage was wrong for our specific mod status. I finally just traced the circuit back and found a bad diode in 10 minutes. Has anyone else run into a manual being flat out wrong on a common unit?
