Is the 2 year factory calibration check really worth 900 bucks?

I paid Premier Avionics in Tucson 900 dollars for a full calibration on our bench test set. Got it back with a sticker and a sheet of numbers that mostly matched what I already knew. But my buddy says skipping it caused a bad pitot static check on a 172 last fall, so maybe it's cheap insurance. Anyone else feel like this is a racket or have a story where it actually saved you?
