But what about when the manual is wrong? I've seen old prints with mistakes that never got fixed in the book. The guy who's been there twenty years knows where the real gas line is, not the one on the diagram. Sometimes the story saves you from a huge problem the manual doesn't even mention.

Oh man, @hayes.tara, that's so true. I read a case study once about a factory where the official wiring diagrams were totally wrong. The old hands knew to avoid a whole panel because of a hidden fault from the 90s, a story passed down that saved them from a major fire. The books never caught up. Makes you wonder how many places run on that kind of tribal knowledge, right?
