My coffee shop run-in with a retired ranger gave me a new take on trail selection...

I was grabbing coffee last week and ended up talking to a retired park ranger at the next table. He mentioned some off-the-beaten-path routes in the Canadian Rockies he used to maintain. It hit me that I always just picked trails from apps or books... missing out on local knowledge. For example, he told me about a high alpine loop near Jasper that most guides skip. Now I make a point to ask other hikers or folks in trail towns for their favorite spots. It's led to some amazing quiet campsites and views... way better than the crowded main trails. That quick chat really changed how I plan my trips now.

Apps work fine most times though, right?

Sure, until an update breaks the login for three days. Even simple stuff like a food delivery app can get stuck in a loading loop when you're actually hungry. They're fine until the one time you really need them to work.

Yeah, apps are fine until they're not, like @elizabeth_wells said. My last trip I was totally reliant on one for a trail map. Got to a fork and the whole thing just froze, probably from no signal. Had to guess, which led to a very long, unplanned detour past a very angry squirrel's nest. Now I'm that guy awkwardly asking other hikers for directions while trying to look like I know what I'm doing. The retired ranger method sounds way smarter.
