It was a standard utility stub-out symbol I'd used a thousand times, but his question made me realize I was just copying old details without really thinking. I had to stop and actually explain the water line connection, which was a good reminder to check my own assumptions. Do you ever find yourself on autopilot with standard details?

My five year old nephew asked me why I make 'glass bubbles' and it stuck with me

I was working on some simple implosion pendants at my home studio last weekend, just basic stuff, and my nephew was watching. He pointed at the furnace and asked, 'Why do you make so many glass bubbles?' I mean, I just laughed at first and said it's my job. But later, I kept thinking about it. To him, it wasn't a paperweight or a pendant or a vase, it was just a bubble I trapped in glass. It made me realize how much I overcomplicate things trying to make 'art' and sometimes forget the simple joy of the process itself, you know? The way the glass moves and captures air. Has anyone else had a simple question from a non-glass person totally shift how you see your own work?

Hot take: My 'bad movie night' group in Boise only works if we start with the worst film first, not the best one.

We tried to save the absolute worst for last, but after a 3-hour slog through 'The Last Vampire on Earth', a 2007 direct-to-DVD mess, everyone was too tired and annoyed to enjoy the slightly better bad movie we had lined up, so now we always open with the biggest disaster to get the groans and laughs out early.

Three years ago in a San Antonio office building, I had to run a whole new line just for the alarm. Now it's all over a $15 cellular module, which is simpler but feels less solid somehow. What's the oldest tech you still see out there that makes you shake your head?

Overheard a new guy talking about suction line pressure on the dock

I was grabbing a coffee at the yard in Mobile yesterday and heard a young hand telling his buddy he runs his suction line at 80 psi no matter what. I almost choked. I've been on cutterheads for fifteen years, and that's a sure way to plug a line or wear out a pump fast. The takeaway for me was how easy it is to pick up bad habits if no one tells you different. On our last job in the channel, we were moving from soft mud to some old clay, and I had to drop pressure from 65 down to 45 just to keep the flow right. It made me think we should do more of these simple 'here's why' talks during safety meetings, not just the rules. Anyone have a good way they explain line pressure to new crew without making them feel dumb?

Appreciation post: my local roaster told me to wait 10 days after the roast date before brewing

I always used my beans right away, thinking fresh was best. The owner at Ground Up in Denver said to let them rest for a full week and a half to let the CO2 settle. I tried it with a bag of their Ethiopian, marking the calendar. The coffee was way smoother, no harsh bite at all. Has anyone else found a specific rest time that works better for certain beans?

My grandma's handwritten bread recipe is basically a ghost now

I used to make her rye loaf exactly like she showed me, with a sourdough starter she kept for 30 years and a specific soak for the caraway seeds. After she passed, my aunt typed it up 'to preserve it' but left out the part about the damp cloth over the bowl during the first rise. I found the original card last month and the difference is wild, the typed version makes a brick. Has anyone else had a family recipe get messed up like that by someone trying to 'help'?

A clinic in Kentucky made me rethink my whole approach to trimming for navicular

About five years back, I went to a clinic put on by a vet and a farrier in Lexington. They showed us a set of x-rays from a horse that had been trimmed with a really low heel, and the bone changes were clear as day. Before that, I was mostly just trying to get a nice, balanced foot every time, but I didn't always think about the long-term internal picture. Now, I spend a lot more time looking at the whole horse and its history before I even pick up a tool. Anyone else have a specific moment that changed how you handle a common problem like that?

Hit 1,000 panes of glass cut without a single major break today

I was cleaning up the shop and checked my log book from the start of the year. I've cut exactly 1,000 panes for various jobs since January, and I didn't have a single one shatter on the table (you know, the kind that makes you jump). I had a few close calls with some tricky tempered stuff, but they all held. It's a silly thing to track, but it feels like a weird little win. Anyone else keep count of their 'no-break' streaks?

Just hit 500 shoes shaped in a single month and it's making me rethink my whole process

I've been at this for 15 years and my usual count is around 350. This month, a big ranch in Bozeman needed a full herd done before a show, and I pushed hard to get it. The crazy part is, my wrist isn't killing me like it used to be when I did half that number. I switched to a different rounding hammer, the 16 oz. Cliff Carroll, about six months back and it's cut my shaping time per shoe way down. But now I'm looking at the pile of steel and wondering if speed is always good. Some of the old guys I learned from would say rushing a shape hurts the fit, but my clinch numbers are still tight. What's the real limit here before quality drops? Has anyone else pushed their personal count and noticed a change in their work?
