Those heated water bowls for winter? Total waste of $35

Bought this fancy heated water bowl from the farm supply store back in November, rated for down to -20 degrees. First real freeze last week and the thing cracked right down the middle, water all over the run. Anyone found a cheap reliable way to keep the water from freezing that actually works?

Rubber pans still freeze solid, styrofoam floats don't cut it in serious cold.

Maybe it's not that deep, birds and squirrels drink from puddles just fine. A cracked bowl stinks but a cheap rubber feed pan from the tractor store holds up way better than plastic. Hard to beat a simple chunk of styrofoam floating in a bucket if you really want to stop ice.
