Bought a $30 red light headlamp and it ruined my night vision for 20 minutes after I clicked it off

The beam was way too bright even on the lowest setting, and now I'm stuck using a cracked phone app with a red filter instead, has anyone found a decent cheap headlamp that actually keeps your eyes adjusted?

Wait hold on, 20 minutes? That seems like a lot. I use a cheap $15 Energizer headlamp with a red mode and my eyes are back to normal in like 2-3 minutes tops after turning it off. Maybe your lamp just had a really intense red LED or you were staring right at the beam? Most basic red lights aren't that harsh unless you're looking straight into them.

Yeah the cheap ones with one red LED are usually fine, but some of those $30 lamps pack a super bright red that's basically torture for your eyes. Grab a Petzl e+Lite, it's like $25 and has a proper dim red that won't wreck your night vision. Set it to the lowest red mode before you go outside and you'll be good.
