Hit 1,000 square feet of broom finish in a single pour last Tuesday

That's a personal record for me on a residential driveway. I usually top out around 700 with hand tools before my back gives out. But I had a helper who actually knew how to handle the hose and we just kept moving. Some guys I know push for machine finishing on anything over 500 feet and say I'm wasting time. They might be right for speed, but I think broom finish looks better on driveways. What's your cutoff for calling in a power trowel crew versus just doing it by hand?

Picked up two mystery novels for book club and one was clearly the winner

I read 'The Silent Patient' and 'The Maid' back to back for our group's thriller month, and the pacing difference was huge. 'The Silent Patient' kept me guessing until the final chapters while 'The Maid' felt predictable by page 100. Has anyone else found that slow-burn mysteries work way better for discussion than ones that give away the twist too early?

Warning: Don't start Severance on a Tuesday night like I did

Last week I made the mistake of clicking episode 1 of Severance around 8 PM on a Tuesday. By 3 AM I had burned through all 9 episodes and was staring at my ceiling trying to figure out what I just watched. I called in sick the next day because I got maybe 2 hours of sleep and my brain was still processing that finale. My supervisor left me a voicemail asking if I was okay because I never call out. The worst part is season 2 doesn't come out for another few months and now I'm just stuck thinking about weird office snacks and goat rooms. Has anyone else had a show completely wreck your sleep schedule like this or am I the only one who can't pace themselves?

Tried to air-layer a maple branch and it snapped off after 3 weeks

I was doing an air-layer on a decent sized Norway maple branch back in June. Wrapped it up with sphagnum and foil, checked it weekly. After 3 weeks I went to tighten the wrap and the whole thing cracked right off at the cut. Lost a branch that would have made a solid 4 foot tree. My buddy Dave said I cut too deep on the girdle but I followed a YouTube video exactly. Anyone else have air-layers fail because the branch wasn't strong enough to hold?

Finally found a free copy of Deus Ex after hunting for 6 months

I spent ages chasing down $20 copies on eBay that always got sniped. Last week I snagged it for zero dollars on a local Facebook swap group, just had to drive 15 minutes to some guy's garage. Anyone else luck out on freebies that way?

Shoutout to that hostel in Lisbon with the weird bunk bed setup

I stayed at this place near the Alfama district last month and they had these triple-stacked bunks that felt like climbing into a coffin for 25 euros a night... has anyone else run into hostels trying to squeeze too many beds into one room?

Dry aged a ribeye in my home fridge for 45 days. Thought it was a joke.

Picked up a $200 prime ribeye, dropped it in a dry aging bag, and forgot about it. The crust was nasty but the meat tasted like a $400 steak. Has anyone else tried home dry aging with the bags?

Unpopular opinion: glass bowls are worse for proofing dough than plastic

I was at King Arthur Flour's baking class in Vermont last weekend. The instructor swore by glass bowls for proofing. But I switched to a plastic tub last year and my rise times are way more consistent. Glass holds too much cold from the countertop. Anyone else notice a difference with their dough proofing vessels?

Had the most brutal 3-day service call last month in an old Victorian near Boston

Every single wire in the ceiling was cloth wrapped and crumbling, and I ended up having to pull 200 feet of new romex through walls that had been stuffed with newspaper insulation from the 1920s.

Dublin hostels went from $30 to $55 a night in one year

I booked a 6-bed dorm at Jacobs Inn in Dublin in March 2023 for $30 a night. Same room, same hostel, March 2024 was $55. Post-Covid crowds and fewer hostels operating seem to be the cause. Anyone else noticing prices jumping this fast in other European cities?
