Hot take: star hopping with a $90 planisphere beats my phone app and it's not even close
I used SkySafari on my phone for about 8 months before a guy at the Tulsa astronomy meetup handed me a planisphere and told me to leave the screen in my pocket. The difference is huge: the app's blue light wrecked my dark adaptation so bad that I could barely make out M31, but with the planisphere and a red flashlight I spotted Andromeda in under 20 minutes. Phone screens also kill your night vision for a solid 20 to 30 minutes every time you glance at a notification. Has anyone else made this switch, or am I just bad at ignoring texts while I'm outside?
Phone screens also kill your night vision for a solid 20 to 30 minutes, and that line alone is why I stopped pulling mine out in the field. Man, I feel you on the notifications thing, it is not you being bad at ignoring texts, it is just how bright those screens are.
