The neighbor who thought my telescope was a spy device

Last Tuesday night I was out in the backyard trying to line up my old 4.5 inch reflector on Jupiter when my neighbor Stan comes stomping over with a flashlight in my face. He goes 'I see you aiming that thing at my house every night!' and I had to explain I was looking at a planet 400 million miles away, not his living room window. After I let him look through the eyepiece at the moons of Jupiter, he stood there quiet for a minute and then asked if I could check out his roof gutters next. Anyone else have a neighbor get weird about a telescope before?

Heard a guy on a podcast say telescopes freak people out because of all the spy movie stuff.

That spy movie stuff is mostly about surveillance cameras and listening devices, not telescopes you'd buy at a store. Most people get freaked out by telescopes because they don't understand how they actually work.
