That time my grandma told me my pie crust was too tough

It was Thanksgiving two years ago at my aunt's house in Ohio. I had spent like 4 hours on this apple pie, chilling the butter, using ice water, the whole deal. I was so proud of it, golden and flaky looking on top. Then my grandma took one bite and said, "Honey, you worked that dough to death. It's tough as a shoe." I was crushed at first, but she was right. She showed me how she barely touches her dough, just pats it together until it holds. Now I barely mix it and my pies come out way better. Anyone else get a brutal but honest tip from a family member that actually helped?

OH MAN that hits home. My dad once watched me make spaghetti sauce from scratch for like three hours and said "you know they sell cans of this at the store right?" Then he took a bite and just nodded like yeah it's fine. But later he showed me how he just throws a can of crushed tomatoes with some garlic and basil and calls it a day. Now I don't waste my whole Sunday on sauce and honestly nobody can tell the difference. Grandmas and dads know what's UP even if they deliver it with a side of sass.

That basic sauce thing works for so many dishes. Rice too.
