My job's call schedule means I water at dusk and my plants are thriving, not dying.

I think the hard rule to always water in the morning is wrong if your real life, like back-to-back afternoon meetings, makes that impossible for your balcony pots.

So the real rule is just don't get the leaves wet, got it.

You mentioned the "hard rule" to always water in the morning, and you're right that it's not the only way. But the reason for that rule is about preventing fungal problems, which love damp leaves and cool night air. Watering at dusk can work, but you have to be really careful to water the soil only and not the plant itself. If you splash the leaves and they stay wet overnight, you're asking for mildew or other issues. Your schedule works because you're making it work, but the morning advice is there for a reason.

Try using a watering can with a long, narrow spout to really target the soil without splashing the leaves (it's a game changer for evening waterers). That way you get the water right where it needs to go and skip the damp foliage that causes trouble overnight. Your method proves the real rule is just to keep the plants dry above ground when the sun goes down.
