My sister-in-law saw my setup and said 'that's not a real garden'

She was over for dinner in Portland last week, looked at my three fabric pots of tomatoes and peppers, and just laughed. She said you need at least a full yard of dirt for it to count, which really got under my skin. I've been getting salad greens from this balcony for two years now. Has anyone else had a friend or family member dismiss your small space growing?

Your sister-in-law is just plain wrong, and @seth_carr had the perfect way to handle it. A real garden is about growing things you can use, not how much dirt you own. Enjoy those homegrown tomatoes and ignore the noise.

My aunt said the same thing about my herb box. I just handed her a fresh basil leaf and asked if it tasted fake.

I always ask people like that where their last meal came from. My three pots of cherry tomatoes gave me more fruit last year than my parents' whole backyard patch. Their definition is just wrong.
