Plastic pots versus fabric bags, I finally switched after root rot killed my peppers
I ran plastic pots for three seasons on my balcony in Portland. My jalapenos always started strong then turned yellow by August. I blamed the heat or my watering habits. Last spring I tried two 5 gallon fabric bags for my bell peppers and kept everything else in plastic. Same soil mix, same spot, same watering schedule. The fabric bag peppers grew bigger and the roots looked white and healthy when I pulled them at the end of the season. The plastic ones had that sour smell and mushy bottom roots from water pooling. Draining is everything in small spaces where you can't control the rain. Now I'm slowly replacing all my containers with the fabric ones. Has anyone found a good saucer setup for fabric bags that doesn't make a mess on wooden balconies?

Switched half my tomatoes to fabric bags two summers ago and the difference in root health was wild, though I did lose one bag to a squirrel that chewed a hole right through the side looking for moisture. Ended up setting the bags on those cheap wire plant stands so air gets underneath and the runoff just drips onto the concrete instead of soaking my deck boards. Still hunting for a saucer that actually stays put when I move them around though.
