Picked a free open-world game over a $5 shooter on Steam sale and got 60 hours of fun

I had to choose between downloading the free Epic Games Store title and dropping five bucks on a discounted FPS last weekend, and I went with the freebie because my wallet was crying. Has anyone else passed up a cheap deal for a free game and ended up surprised by how much you played it?

Man, yeah, I've been there a bunch of times. I remember passing up a 5 dollar tactical shooter during a Steam sale to grab a free city builder from somewhere, and I ended up sinking like 50 hours into it just building roads and managing traffic. The paid game I was gonna buy is still sitting in my wishlist untouched. Free games are weird like that, you go in with zero expectations and they just click because you're not worried about getting your money's worth. That survival game you played sounds similar, you just let yourself get lost in it without thinking about the cost.

and honestly free games have gotten way better than people give them credit for. i grabbed a freebie from epic last year and it ended up being a 40 hour survival game i never woulda tried otherwise. sometimes the cheap deals are just okay shooters you'll play for a weekend and forget. free games can surprise you when you got no expectations about value for money.
