Coworker told me my rain jacket was trapping sweat, not rain

Been commuting 8 miles each way for two years in a cheap poncho. Last week a guy at the bike lockup said I was basically wrapping myself in a garbage bag and cooking from the inside. Switched to a breathable shell with pit zips and I'm not showing up drenched in sweat anymore. Anyone else go through three jackets before finding one that actually works?

...and honestly I went through like FIVE jackets before I figured out it wasn't even about the rain it was about the sweat. I was so focused on keeping dry from the OUTSIDE I forgot I'm basically a walking furnace on a bike. The real game changer for me wasn't even a jacket it was learning to LAYER right underneath. I started wearing a thin merino base layer under a shell with big pit zips and suddenly I wasn't showing up to work looking like I jumped in a pool. But then I got a jacket with a weird mesh lining that just held moisture against my skin and I had to start ALL over again. The whole thing is basically trial and error until you find that ONE combo that doesn't make you feel like a steamed vegetable.

...and that mesh lining thing is such a trap, right? I had a jacket once that had this weird grid pattern on the inside and I thought it was some kind of fancy tech but it just turned into a sweat sponge after ten minutes. So did you find that merino base layer made a big difference compared to something synthetic? I feel like everyone swears by merino but I've been burned by itchy cheap stuff that felt like sandpaper. And what about the pit zips, are they actually big enough to vent or do you end up just unzipping the whole front like I do?
