I regret buying that $80 waterproof jacket, my $15 poncho does better
Bought some fancy breathable shell from REI last fall for commuting in PDX rain and it soaked through at the shoulders within 3 months. Switched back to a basic poncho that covers my bag too, zero leaks, and I can roll it up smaller. Anyone else find the cheap plastic stuff outperforms the expensive gear for daily city riding?

$80 and it soaked through in 3 months? That's wild. My $12 poncho from the drugstore has lasted two rainy seasons and still keeps my backpack dry on the bus. The fancy jacket probably has some tech fabric that breaks down fast, meanwhile cheap vinyl just doesn't care. You're not wrong about the pack coverage either, that's a huge win for the poncho. Guess the expensive stuff is for people who want to look like they're hiking, not folks actually dealing with rain. I'd rather be dry than look cool on the commute.

Ditching my $70 rain jacket for a $10 poncho from the hardware store last winter. @lee.diana nailed it, the cheap vinyl just doesnt break down like that fancy breathable tech stuff. Plus I can pull the hood over my helmet and it covers my whole handlebar bag. Honestly, looking like a walking garbage bag beats showing up soaked.
