That guy at the bike shop told me I was ruining my chain by cleaning it too often
He said I was washing off all the factory grease and making it wear out faster, but after 6 months of barely wiping it down I got grit in my derailleur and had to replace the whole thing for $60, so has anyone else had a mechanic give bad advice that cost you money?
Used to be the same way, thought less cleaning meant the factory lube would last forever. Then my chain started skipping on a group ride and the shop showed me the grit had basically sanded down the jockey wheels. Now I wipe it down every couple hundred miles and re-lube with a dry wax, way cheaper than that $60 derailleur replacement you got stuck with. Some mechanics just parrot old habits without thinking about how we actually ride.
