Heads up on the new wireless sensor battery types

I had to choose between sticking with the standard lithium cells or switching to the new 'low-temp' ones for an outdoor job in Minneapolis. Went with the low-temp version and it's been solid through two weeks of freezing nights. Anyone else tested these in cold climates yet?

Rant: I think we're too quick to condemn topping trees in every single case

Last week in Springfield, I had to deal with a massive silver maple that was pushing against a power line after a storm. The utility company was going to just cut the whole thing down. I did a careful reduction cut, basically a controlled top, to clear the line by 8 feet and save the tree. Everyone at the shop said I was wrong, but the alternative was a total removal. Sometimes you have to pick the least bad option to keep a tree standing. Has anyone else had to make a call like that to avoid a complete removal?

I think the whole 'track everything' trend in bullet journals is a mistake

Three years ago, my journal was just a simple notebook for tasks. Last month, I tried a complex setup with 15 different trackers for water, mood, sleep, and more. It felt like a second job just filling it all in. By last week, I realized I was spending 20 minutes a day on upkeep instead of actually doing things. The pressure to keep the trackers perfect made me avoid the journal. Now I'm back to a basic list and it's a relief. Has anyone else ditched the detailed trackers and found it better?

Rant: Heard a guy at the parts counter telling a customer to just top off their coolant with water, no matter what

I was picking up a thermostat gasket yesterday and the guy next to me was asking about a coolant leak. The counter guy said, 'Just keep adding water, it's all the same stuff anyway.' That's flat wrong, especially with modern aluminum blocks and the different coolant types. Using straight water can cause corrosion and won't protect against freezing or boiling like the proper mix. Has anyone else had to correct this kind of bad advice for a customer after the fact?

Finally swapped from standard Teflon tape to the blue Monster Seal stuff on a big apartment job.

Had zero leaks on 200+ gas fittings last week, the thicker seal just seats way better. Anyone else find a go-to thread sealant for gas lines they trust?

Vent: Hit 5000 feet of wire pulled in a single house job yesterday

Looked at the spool count at the end of the day and it just hit me. We were doing a full retrofit on a huge old place in the historic district, three floors plus a finished attic. The owner wanted everything hardwired, no wireless sensors, and we had to run fresh lines for every window and door contact, plus motion detectors and glass breaks. My arms are still sore from fishing through those plaster walls and old fire blocks. It took two of us three full days just for the wire runs. Makes you miss the simpler jobs sometimes, where a wireless kit would have done the trick in half the time. Anyone else get a retrofit where the client's specs just blew your normal numbers out of the water?

We got turned around in a whiteout near Panhandle Gap, soaked and cold, only to stumble into a perfect, empty campsite at Golden Lakes. Has a single bad weather call ever led you to a better spot than you planned?

Pro tip: A customer in Omaha said my pork shoulder trim was too aggressive and losing them money.

They pointed out I was cutting off nearly a full pound of usable meat per shoulder, which adds up fast on a big order. I started leaving a quarter inch more fat cap and the feedback on tenderness and yield has been solid. How do you all decide where that trim line is on a shoulder for retail?
