That 'shortcut' through the park nearly cost me my front wheel
I tried cutting through Riverside Park to skip three stoplights on my commute, but last week a tree root ripped my tire off the rim going downhill. Now I'm sitting here with a bent rim and a 40 minute walk to the bike shop. Anyone else have a supposed time-saver that turned into a total disaster?

Funny enough, that same park is actually where I learned the hard way that "mountain biking" on a road bike is a bad idea. Had a buddy who used to race BMX and he warned me about those roots breaking spokes clean in half. My trick now is I take the long way around the east side of the park, adds two minutes but saves me from buying new wheels every season.

Man that road bike on trails story hits close to home. I blew out a rear hub last spring because I thought I could save time cutting through a gravel path on my commuter. The rims got so bent the shop guy laughed when I rolled in. Now I just stick to the pavement loop even if it adds ten minutes, my wallet can't take another lesson like that.
