Rewatched The Wire after 10 years and suddenly understood why McNulty was such a mess the whole time

When I first saw it in my early 20s I just thought he was a jerk, but now after dealing with burnout at work for 5 years straight his whole spiral makes perfect sense, anyone else get way more out of a rewatch as an adult?

I read this great article last year about how The Wire was originally written with a older audience in mind and it makes so much sense now. At 22 I laughed at McNulty getting drunk and sabotaging his relationships but at 37 that stuff is just sad. His whole "I'm just trying to do my job" attitude while actively ignoring his own life is textbook burnout behavior. The scene where he's sitting in that empty apartment with just a mattress really hit different this time because I've had those nights where you're too tired to even unpack boxes. The show really captures how the system grinds people down, not just the criminals but the cops too.

Real life has a way of wearing down people who actually care about doing something right. The system doesn't reward that kind of effort, it just chews them up and spits them out. That empty apartment scene is basically a metaphor for how burnout hollows out your whole life until there's nothing left but the bare minimum.
