Pro tip: A friend told me my game teach was a confusing info dump and it cut our play time by half
I used to explain every rule upfront, but after he said 'dude, just show us as we go,' I now teach the basics and jump in, which saved our Gloomhaven session last week and kept everyone engaged.

You're right about that "constant stops" problem, but the real trick is knowing WHICH rules ARE the basics. For Gloomhaven, I make sure everyone gets how card initiatives and loss cards work before we start, because those choices shape your whole hand. But I save the weird monster focus rules for when we draw that first archer.

That "just show us as we go" method can backfire hard. For a heavy game like Gloomhaven, not explaining combat cards or monster movement upfront means constant stops to clarify. I've seen it turn a 2 hour game into a 4 hour slog of rule checks. Some games need that upfront structure so everyone starts on the same page. What do you do when a rule comes up mid game that changes someone's whole turn?
