Spent 3 hours trying to teach my friends Root and gave up after the first turn.

I thought explaining the factions would take 20 minutes tops, but after 45 minutes of reading and another 2 hours of confusion, we just played a simplified version where nobody followed the rules, has anyone else had a game night completely fall apart like that?

Jokes on you, I tried to teach Root to my cat. Figured she'd get the Vagabond. She knocked all the pieces off the table and ate the bird tokens. So I'd say your game night went better than mine. At least you got to a simplified version. I ended up explaining the rules to myself out loud for an hour before realizing I was alone. But seriously, that first turn confusion is real. I had a friend spend ten minutes trying to move his Woodland Alliance through the clearings only to realize he forgot to place the sympathy tokens. We just called it a night after that.

Root cats don't eat sympathy tokens though. That's the real tragedy.

My buddy put the keep in the wrong spot and just stared at the board for twenty minutes.
