Blew a tube sheet weld on a 60 inch boiler in Gary and learned something the hard way
I was rushing the root pass with 6010 and didn't let the plate cool down, so it cracked right along the seam. Has anyone else had luck running a preheat on thicker tube sheets or do you just slow down and take the extra time?
Sounds like you just got in a hurry man. 6010 roots on a 60 inch tube sheet, that's a lot of heat going into one spot if you're not moving around. Were you running it continuous or skipping around? Most guys I know just stagger their passes and let it cool natural instead of dragging out the torch. Preheat helps on cold plate but it aint gonna save you if you're dumping too much heat too fast in one area. Cracking along the seam sounds more like restraint stress than a preheat problem. Slow down, move around, and you'll prob be fine.
