I just wasted $45 on a 'professional' cake turntable that wobbled so much it ruined my buttercream.

Ugh that wobble is the worst. I had the same thing happen with a "pro" model that shook like a washing machine off balance. The cheap ones are honestly hit or miss, but a good heavy one makes all the difference. I finally found a solid metal one with a wide base, and it doesn't budge. It's more about weight and a tight bearing than just the price tag.

Appreciation post: tried a new brand of foils for highlights and the difference was huge

Honestly, it's just foil. The cheap stuff gets the bleach on the hair, right? Seems like a lot of fuss over something you throw away.

Saw a camera shop in Portland with a 'no vintage' policy on the door

Wow, I totally get why that feels wrong. I used to think shops should try to fix anything old that came in, like it was their duty. But then I watched my friend who repairs cameras spend three hours just to find a tiny broken spring for a 1970s SLR. He made maybe twenty bucks after all that. It's a fast way to go out of business. So now I see it as them just being honest about what they can actually do without losing money.

A fire at the Kansas City Royal last year made me rethink my whole smoker setup.

That whole scene is why my fire extinguisher now lives right next to the smoker, not back in the truck. Bought one rated for grease fires after seeing how water just makes it worse. It feels like overkill until you need it.

Remember when everyone used to strip with methylene chloride?

Time-travel you back to shop class"? Come on, how bad could a little old smell really be?
