Finally figured out the tack weld trick for warped plate in Houston
Been fighting warped base plates for months on a refinery job down here. Last week I tried welding short tacks at the edges instead of center first, then worked inward. Cut my straightening time from 45 minutes per plate to under 10. The fitter I work with said "why didn't we do this months ago" and honestly I didn't have an answer. Anyone else dealt with plate distortion on hot days, or got a better sequence for tack order?
Working edge to center is fine until you get a plate with a bow in the middle, then you're just chasing the warp around the perimeter. Out here in the heat we've had better luck clamping to a strongback and skipping the tacks altogether. 10 minutes still sounds long to me.
