Unpopular opinion: the "grind the crack out" advice cost me a full shift
Old timer named Pete at Local 112 in Toledo told me to just grind any crack out and reweld, no need to stop and think. I did that on a 3 inch thick pressure vessel seam last month. Ground for 2 hours, welded for 4, then the inspector flagged it because I'd turned a small crack into a wider one that changed the joint geometry. Pete meant well but his rule worked for his era, not for modern code. Now I stop, measure the crack end first, and use that little drill stop trick. Has anyone else gotten advice that sounds solid but backfires on thicker steel?

My uncle had a similar thing with drywall mud. Old school guy told him to just slather it on thick and sand it down, no big deal. First big job he did with that advice, he spent all night sanding because it kept cracking where it dried uneven. Now he does thin coats and waits. Kinda funny how the old shortcut ends up taking longer than doing it right.
