Our book club in Denver spent three weeks arguing about the ending of 'The Road' and it almost broke us.

Honestly that ending is pretty clear cut. The boy gets found by the good guys, the father's sacrifice means something. People read way too much into the "carrying the fire" line. It's a hopeful note in a bleak book, not some deep mystery.

It's actually pretty open to interpretation though. The "good guys" might not be what they seem, and the fire line is repeated too much to just be a simple hope thing. McCarthy leaves it vague on purpose.
