A binder in Denver told me my spines were too stiff and it took me 3 months to admit he was right
He said I was gluing too close to the hinge and the book wouldn't open flat, so I started leaving an eighth inch gap and now every journal I make lies open from page one, has anyone else had to unlearn a habit they were sure was correct?
Not sure the eighth inch gap is what's doing the work here. The real fix with gluing too close to the hinge is that you're locking the spine and the pages can't flex, but an eighth inch gap won't save you if the glue is still stiff when it dries. I made this mistake for years too, and what actually helped was using a more flexible glue and pressing the spine flat while it sets instead of clamping it tight. If your journals open flat now, the gap is probably letting the glue bond thinner so it bends easier. Reason it took you so long to admit he was right is that the bad habit feels like it's working until you see a book that opens right next to yours.
