Question about a leather paring technique I saw in Savannah

I watched a binder at a small shop there pare a full skin down to 0.5mm in one go, which I thought was impossible. Has anyone else mastered that specific method?

Isn't that the kind of thing that makes you wonder how many shortcuts you're missing? @simonl86 put it well, it really does feel like they have a secret map of the work or something. That level of skill just comes from so much practice it looks like magic from the outside.

Watching that binder work down to 0.5mm in one go is a great example of how real skill looks impossible to an outsider. I see this all the time with experts in any field, from coding to cooking. Their deep practice lets them skip steps the rest of us think are required.

It's like they have a secret map of the work that cuts out all the wrong turns we'd take.
