My avocado pit has been soaking for months with zero action

I set it up in a jar of water back in spring, and it's still just a brown lump. At this rate, I'll retire before it even thinks about sprouting. Is there a trick to this, or do some seeds just enjoy the wait? I'm half tempted to wire it up with a small light to see if that helps, but that's probably overkill.

Yeah, that old seed is definitely a lost cause by now. For the new one, peel off that thin brown skin after you take it out of the fruit. Stab the toothpicks into the widest part and keep the bottom third in water, changing it every week. If you're really fed up, skip the glass and just wrap a fresh, peeled pit in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag.

Toss that old seed out. It might be rotten or just a dud. Grab a fresh one and try the toothpick method instead.

That seed is more stubborn than a rock! Maybe take @nguyen.wesley's advice and try the toothpick trick with a new one. You could be waiting long enough for that little light to need its own pension plan.
