Just found out how much mortar joints actually breathes

Was reading through an old bricklaying manual from the 1920s I found at a flea market near Flint last weekend, and it said mortar joints let out like 90% of the moisture in a wall over time. Blew my mind because I always thought the bricks themselves did all the drying. Anybody else ever come across weird old trade facts that changed how you work?

Wait, does that mean I've been blaming my shoddy brickwork on the wrong thing this whole time? Cause I've got a garden wall that's basically a moisture sponge, and I thought it was just my bad aim with the trowel. So the mortar's been doing the heavy lifting while I stand there like a chump thinking I'm some kind of bricklaying genius? Man, that's a humbling thought, like finding out your dog's been writing your grocery list and you just didn't notice.

Guess bricks are just fancy spectators in their own wall.
