Hot take: Never buy fancy candles from thrift stores before testing them first

Last week I grabbed a beautiful $2 candle from a shop in Denver, lit it at home, and it smelled exactly like burnt plastic because someone had used it to mask cigarette smoke, so now I'm stuck with a stinky souvenir - anyone else get burned by a thrift candle that seemed like a steal?

Grabbed a vanilla-scented one from Goodwill once. Lit it up and got this weird BO smell mixed with fake sugar. Had to throw the whole thing outside. Now I hold every thrift candle up to my nose and sniff hard before buying. Some of them have clearly been sitting in garage sales for years absorbing dust and cat pee. That $2 price tag can hide some real nasty surprises.
