Chose a hostel over a private room in Lisbon, kind of regretting it
Booked a 10-bed dorm at Yes! Lisbon for $22 a night instead of a $65 private room, but someone snored like a chainsaw at 3 AM and woke everyone up. Anyone else had the shared room gamble backfire on a trip?

I used to be all about saving money on hostels, that was my whole thing for years. But man, after getting stuck in a room with a chainsaw snorer in Barcelona one time, it flipped a switch in my head and now I'm way more picky. I've actually had way better luck paying a bit more for a private room, especially when you factor in the lost sleep and how grumpy it makes you the next day exploring the city. The worst part is you can't even get mad because the guy is asleep and doesn't know he's doing it, but your whole trip gets messed up. I still think hostels have their place for meeting people and stuff, but for sleeping I'll take the quiet room every time now.
