Got stuck in Lisbon for 6 hours with no cash

I was in Lisbon last month and my bank card got eaten by an ATM at 2 AM. Had to walk 20 minutes to find a hostel that let me charge my phone and call my bank. Has anyone else dealt with a card emergency in a foreign country and found a solid backup plan?

Dude that sucks, same thing happened to me in Thailand except my card just stopped working completely. Learned the hard way to always carry two cards from different banks and keep one hidden in my bag not my wallet. Also started keeping a small stash of emergency cash inside an old sock or something, like 50 bucks just in case. Another thing that saved me was having a digital card on my phone through Revolut or something similar so if the physical card dies you can still tap to pay.
