My messy backpack in Peru made me a packing cube fan

I always avoided packing cubes (they seemed like extra hassle). On a hike there, my bag was a total disaster. Another hiker let me use some cubes, and I could find everything easily. This made the trip smoother and kept my costs down. Now I pack them for every trip.

Found they actually slow me down. For my camera gear and hiking snacks, cubes made awkward hard rectangles that wasted space. Stuffing things loose into bag corners works better for my weird shaped items. The extra step of unzipping each cube felt like more hassle than just reaching into a bag pocket.

My husband bought me a set of those cubes THREE Christmases ago and they sat in the closet until last month. I felt so guilty every time I saw them. Finally tried them for a weekend trip and wow, I was packing like a frantic squirrel before. Now I can actually find my socks.
