Stop booking hotels through the big travel sites for Lisbon

I just got back from Portugal and saw so many people paying way too much. The big sites like Booking.com add a 15% fee on top of the hotel's own price. I checked the Hotel Mundial's site directly and saved 80 euros for three nights. Has anyone else found better deals by skipping the middleman in other cities?

What about checking for hidden resort fees too?

Used to just look at the room rate and book. Got burned last year in Vegas with a forty dollar daily fee they never mentioned upfront. Now I always scroll to the very bottom of the booking page for the full total.

Yeah, that hidden fee thing is real. I always check the hotel's own site now, but sometimes the big sites have a better refund policy. It's a pain to check both, but it's saved me money more than once.
