Was dead set against hostel dorms for years. Finally tried one in Lisbon last week.

I always thought sharing a room with strangers would be a nightmare. Loud snorers, people rustling bags at 4am, no privacy. But I was stuck in Lisbon for 5 days and the cheapest private room was $90 a night. A dorm bed at this place called Home Hostel was $22. I figured I'd try it for two nights and hate it. First night a guy came in drunk at 2am but he was dead quiet. Second night I met a couple from Brazil who told me about a free walking tour that saved me $40. Now I'm actually considering dorms for my next trip to Barcelona next month. Has anyone else been surprised by a hostel that totally changed your mind?

Funny how sometimes the things we avoid turn out to be the best move. It's like that with cheap clothes too, I used to buy expensive jeans that fell apart in a year, then tried some budget brand and they lasted three years. People get stuck in their ways with certain things and miss out. Sounds like you found a good spot, the right hostel really can make a difference.

Hear you on the jeans thing. I think it's more about how brands price things based on image rather than quality. Sometimes that cheap brand isn't cutting corners on fabric, they're just not spending money on ads or fancy stores.
