Chat with my neighbor about her 'zero waste' grocery trips
I was talking to my neighbor Sarah the other day, and she said she saves about $40 a week just by buying bulk bins and skipping packaged stuff. She mentioned how she brings her own jars to the local co-op and pays way less for rice, oats, and nuts. It hit me that I've been overpaying for fancy bags of oatmeal for no reason. Have any of you tried bulk buying and actually saw a big drop in your grocery bill?

Does she have to clean those jars before the store lets her fill them?

Nah @vals38, I bet most stores barely even check, it's probably not that serious unless there's actual chunks of stuff stuck to the glass.

Hear me out but I actually think most bulk stores have pretty strict rules about jar cleanliness. Like the one near me won't even let you fill up unless they can see through the glass and there's no sticky residue anywhere. They're pretty serious about it because of cross contamination issues and health codes and all that. So really she probably already cleaned it at home before heading to the store, or at least gave it a solid rinse. But honestly even if she didn't the store employees usually give it a quick once over before they let you fill it anyway, at least the ones I've been to do.
