TIL the Ryder Carroll method has a specific signifier for "priority" and I've been doing it wrong for 2 years
I was flipping through an old blog post about the original bullet journal system and found out that the asterisk signifier is meant for priority, not just "important" like I've been using it. Apparently there's also a rule that priority tasks should get migrated to the top of your daily log, not just left in the middle of the day. In my experience, I've been treating every task like it's urgent, which is probably why my weekly spreads always look like a mess. That got me thinking, do most of you actually stick to Ryder's original signifiers, or do you make up your own? I feel like half the community is super strict about the method and the other half just uses it as a loose template. Curious where everyone lands on that, especially if you've been doing it longer than I have.
Actually the asterisk thing is a common mix-up, but you might have it backwards. In the original system, the asterisk does mean "important" and the priority tasks get the exclamation point or a dot that gets migrated. The rule about moving priority items to the top is more of a weekly review habit than a daily log thing. I've been doing this since 2017 and honestly I only keep about half of Ryder's rules, like the basic dots and dashes, then I made up my own signifiers for calls and waiting. Most people I know who stick with it long term end up customizing eventually because the strict method falls apart once real life gets messy. Do you track your priority stuff on the daily spread or do you have a separate list going?
