My $25 helicoid grease kit beat a full CLA for this old Pentax
After 3 tries with cheap lithium grease making the focus stiffer than a frozen lug nut, I dropped $25 on a proper helicoid grease set and now the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f/1.4 turns like it just came off the assembly line, has anyone else found that the right grease matters more than the cleaning steps?
Wow, that's a huge difference for just 25 bucks. So was it the damping that changed, or the actual smoothness of the turn? I ask because my Helios 44-2 feels gritty in one spot no matter how much I clean the threads. Did you have to redo the shims when you swapped greases, or just wipe the old junk off and regrease? I keep reading that shims control the feel way more than the grease does, but your result kinda says otherwise.
