My buddy in Colorado said his $400 ultralight tent ripped in a 30mph wind gust last fall.

He said the material was too thin to handle it, but I think he just didn't stake it out right. How do you decide when gear is actually faulty versus when it's just not set up properly?

See this everywhere now, like @simonl86 said stuff just fails sometimes. Feels like we're all beta testing products these days, from tents to phone chargers. Hard to know what's a bad setup and what's just cheap gear.

My old Kelty split a seam in a storm on Mount Washington. The wind just found a weak spot in the stitching, it happens. Sometimes the gear just fails no matter how well you pitch it.
