Stove wind guard trick finally made my coffee quick
Been using a cheap folding wind screen with my camping stove for two seasons but it kept tipping over in gusts. Last trip near Moab I wedged it between two rocks and angled it toward the pot, cut my boil time from 9 to 5 minutes. Took me way too long to realize the guard works better slightly tilted, not straight up. Anyone else do something simple like that and wonder why you didn't try it sooner?
Wait, is that really saving you time or just making the pot hotter on one side? If the guard is angled toward the pot, you're funneling the heat into one spot, which can scorch your coffee grounds or make the boil uneven. I tried tilting mine once and the wind just curled around the edge and blew the flame sideways, took even longer than no guard at all. Plus, depending on the stove design and pot size, a straight guard might actually be trapping more heat. You sure it wasn't just the rocks doing the real work?
