Warning: Heard a guy at the trailhead say his $200 sleeping pad popped on a rock
I was packing up at the trailhead near Bend. Overheard two guys talking. One said his fancy inflatable pad got a hole from a tiny pine cone. He patched it three times that trip. Made me think about my own gear choices. Anyone else have a pad that just can't handle rough ground?

That "popped on a rock" line is exactly why I switched. Used to love my inflatable, but after one too many patches I just got a foam pad. It's bulky but I never worry about it.

Yeah, I was a die-hard inflatable person for years, swore by the pack size. But a single sharp twig on a trip last fall left me sleeping on the ground. That cold, hard reality finally made me get a foam pad. It's a trade-off, but waking up dry and warm is worth the extra bulk on my pack.
