I used hot glue for every joint until a kid's fort collapsed on my son
My 6 year old was inside a castle I built and the whole wall just folded over. Turns out hot glue gets brittle when the cardboard flexes. I switched to using those little plastic corner brackets from the hardware store and now my forts actually hold up to climbing.

My cousin used to build these massive blanket forts with PVC pipes and hot glue until his 8 year old tried to climb one and it just snapped at the joint. He switched to using those little white zip ties instead and now he just tightens them with pliers when they get loose. Kinda makes me wonder how many forts I wrecked as a kid without even realizing it.

Wait, zip ties? Like, the little plastic ones you use for cables? My mind is blown right now, @jamieperez. I never would have thought of that, but it actually makes a ton of sense since you can crank them down tight. I bet that's way sturdier than my little brackets, and probably a lot cheaper too.
