My grandson's cardboard castle ended up being a bigger hit than my actual gift
I spent three weeks building a simple little cardboard castle for my grandson's 5th birthday last Saturday. Cut out crenellations, glued on a drawbridge from an old shipping box, even added a paper towel tube tower. His parents bought him some expensive talking robot toy, but he spent the whole afternoon putting his action figures in the castle and ignoring the robot. Has anyone else had store-bought gifts get totally upstaged by a cardboard creation?

A buddy of mine built a spaceship out of refrigerator boxes for his kid's 6th birthday, complete with tin foil control panels and a plastic cup periscope. His in-laws got the kid a fancy tablet, but that cardboard ship was the star of the party for weeks. dylan413 is totally right that those handmade things have a charm no store can match. Kids see the time and love you put into something like that castle, and it makes it feel more real than any robot. Did you end up keeping the castle around for more play sessions afterward?
